Free tabloid's content inappropriate for teens, poll says

Sharp Daily, the popular giveaway tabloid, contains material that is inappropriate for teenagers, the majority of people in a poll said.

Eighteen organisations from the educational, social services, parent-teacher and religious sectors, such as the Professional Teachers' Union and The Society for Truth and Light, surveyed 761 people. Sixty per cent thought some of the newspaper's content would have a negative effect on teenagers' moral values.

The organisations jointly urged the government to revise the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance to regulate free newspapers and prevent them from publishing inappropriate content.

They launched an information campaign to stop such content in the media.

In a statement, the campaign urged Sharp Daily - published by the Next Media group - to take the initiative to improve its content.

The statement called on the government to immediately begin prosecuting media outlets that publish sexual and violent content.
