It was Karie Wong's smile and cheerful attitude that melted Elliot Fung's heart. Karie, a designer, and Elliot, a lawyer, married on February 25 at Marquee, at the Aberdeen Marina Club, celebrating with more than 200 guests.
The couple were introduced by mutual friends at a social gathering in 2006. and were already smitten with each other by the time they left the party.
'Karie and I clicked almost instantly. It felt like an immediate connection,' Elliot recalled. 'We share so many interests. More importantly, we were both very comfortable in each other's company from the very beginning.'
They soon went on their first dinner date, to a cosy restaurant in SoHo. 'It was a simple dinner and a very traditional kind of first date,' Elliot said. 'She smiled the whole time during the dinner and also when we walked around Central. The conversation just flowed.'
Elliot asked Karie to be his girlfriend when he realised how much he missed her. 'Karie has to travel a lot for work. After a while, I really started to miss her when she was away,' he said. 'And I realised that she was the right girl for me.'
In September last year, Elliot surprised Karie while they were in France. Accompanying Karie on a business trip to Paris, he booked them a brief holiday in Cannes on the Riviera.
They were at the InterContinental Carlton Cannes when Elliot proposed. Part of their favourite Alfred Hitchcock movie, To Catch a Thief, was filmed in the historic hotel. Elliot got down on one knee as they enjoyed a beautiful view of the sunset looking through the French windows and asked Karie to be his wife.
'She said yes right away and I could see the happiness in her eyes,' he said. 'It was great timing for us both to settle down.'
Karie said she knew Elliot was the right man for her because he could always make her laugh. Karie's knack of doing the same for Elliot also drew him in. 'It's really hard for me to pinpoint one or two reasons why I love her. It's the whole experience. It just feels right.'
Elliot treasures the time they've shared and looks forward to more to come. 'We are very compatible. During the six years we dated, we loved hanging out together, being lazy and laughing at each other's jokes,' he said.
Their big day was also Elliot's birthday. He got a surprise when Karie serenaded him on stage with Happy Birthday to You and presented him with a Chinese birthday bun. 'Double happiness indeed,' he said.
