Coriolanus is a Shakespearean tragedy that has been adapted into a political thriller. It tells the story of Coriolanus, a feared Roman general who, after being banished, offers his life and services to his enemy.
In the film, set in modern times, Caius Martius 'Coriolanus' (Ralph Fiennes) demonstrates his bravery by leading an invasion of the city of Corioles. The victorious Coriolanus is declared a hero by the Romans.
The great soldier then strives for the position of Consul with the support of his determined mother Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave). Coriolanus must secure the people's backing for this. But he is reluctant to interact with the public, viewing it as an insult to his code of honour.
The people think he's arrogant. To make matters worse, his views are not in line with those of the citizens, which further angers Coriolanus. Soon riots erupt and he is exiled from Rome, where he was once a hero.
Coriolanus seeks revenge and offers his services to his arch-enemy Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler) from the neighbouring state of Volsoes. Aufidius must decide whether to accept Coriolanus' offer to defeat Rome or kill him.
