Photographer turned back from Macau

South China Morning Post photographer Felix Wong Chi-keung was denied entry to Macau two days before World Press Freedom Day.

Wong was sent to cover the Labour Day protests in Macau on Tuesday.

But Macau immigration officials stopped him at the border checkpoint, held him in an office for more than an hour and then sent him back to Hong Kong. Wong was required to sign a notice citing why he was denied entry. It said 'there are strong references that you [Wong] intend to enter the Macau SAR to participate in certain activities which may jeopardise the public security or public order of the Macau SAR'.

Wong said no one asked him his reasons for entering Macau.

Simon Wong Chio-man, a spokesman for the Macau public security police, told the media Macau welcomed any tourists, but if it found any person 'whose identity did not match with his identity as a tourist, the government would handle it according to the law'.

On Tuesday, hundreds of young people rallied against their government's legislative and election reforms and media censorship.

They said the public broadcaster was telling people the majority supported the reforms.
