Legco's new secretary general takes charge
Education undersecretary Kenneth Chen Wei-on officially takes over today as the secretary general of the Legislative Council Secretariat, succeeding Pauline Ng Man-wah. Legco president Jasper Tsang Yok-sing said earlier this month that he had "high hopes" for the 47-year-old Chen, who had shown "a strong passion" for the role.
Deadline expires for 'less risky' structures
The Buildings Department's deadline expires tomorrow for residents of the New Territories to declare any "less risky" illegal structures on their properties. Under the scheme announced by the Development Bureau in April, unauthorised structures such as small canopies and some unenclosed rooftop installations built before June 28 last year can be kept temporarily if they are deemed safe by a qualified person.
TV channel to broadcast Arnie's tell-all talk
The CBS channel's 60 Minutes programme will broadcast an interview with former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in which he will discuss his autobiographical memoir, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, which is to be published on Monday. In previews of the interview, Schwarzenegger is seen telling how his estranged wife Maria Shriver has not read the book, in which he discusses the secret child he fathered with their housekeeper.
City gets ready for a run of pink
The Pink Season 2012, a two-month programme of events aimed at gay and transgender Hongkongers and tourists alike, starts today. The Tourism Board last year approached Pink Alliance, a Hong Kong network of gay-rights groups, with the idea of organising a pride festival for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. There are 30 events, including picnics and photo exhibitions, making it the largest such festival in Asia and one of the largest in the world.
Fire dragon revisits its old haunts
Tai Hang's fire dragon reappears on the neighbourhood's streets for three days from today, starting celebrations marking the Mid-Autumn Festival. The tradition, more than 130 years old, is believed to purge the former village of evil spirits and was listed in June last year by Unesco as an intangible national cultural heritage. Elsewhere, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold the New Territories East Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival at Tai Po Waterfront Park this evening, from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, featuring festive lanterns.
Russia, Fifa to announce 2018 World Cup venues
Russian football authorities and Fifa, the sport's world governing body, will announce the host cities for the 2018 World Cup. In addition to the capital, Moscow, 12 cities are vying for the right to host event, including St Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod.
