The disgraced former mainland railways minister was formally charged with taking bribes and abusing his office after one of the biggest corruption operations of recent years. Liu, who was fired in February 2011, oversaw a massive expansion of the rail network which saw massive debts pile up and tragedy in the form of a deadly high-speed train crash in Wenzhou in 2011.

The French president has seen his Socialist government embroiled in scandal amid revelations that a former budget minister had been charged with tax fraud. As if that wasn't bad enough, there was the news from Mali that a camel given to Hollande had been killed and turned into a delicious tagine by its keepers.

The Pulp Fiction director's latest film might be called Django Unchained, but it seems it couldn't escape the shackles of the mainland censors. Tarantino's hit about slaves in the 19th-century American South was all set to hit screens in China on Thursday, but was pulled that same day due to "technical reasons" - apparently after some showings had started.
