The fung shui con-artist formerly known as Tony Chan was convicted of forging the will of late Chinachem tycoon Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum, after 20 hours of jury deliberation. The millionaire, already embroiled in deep legal troubles and facing a massive tax bill, converted to the Christian faith shortly before his trial, but will be attending a prison chapel for the next 12 years.

The top seed looked like a hot favourite for the ladies' title at Wimbledon as her fellow seeds crashed out early. But Williams, too, was in for a shock. Her 34-match winning streak came to an abrupt end in the fourth round as she was beaten by Germany's Sabine Lisicki. That could have opened the way for Chinese favourite Li Na, but she too stumbled out at the quarter-final stage.

Geopolitical awareness has never been a strong point for most American pop stars, but the singer and actress known to her fans as J.Lo was forced into a humbling apology after playing a birthday gig for one of the world's worst human rights abusers. Lopez said sorry for travelling to Turkmenistan, one of the "most repressive countries in the world" to entertain President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.
