Nobel peace laureates convene summit

Nobel Peace Laureates are convening a three-day global summit in Poland. Chaired by former Soviet President and Nobel Peace Laureate Mikhail Gorbachev alongside the former mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni, the summit in Warsaw will include high-profile leaders and non-for-profit organisations dedicated to the promotion of peace, justice and human rights. Taking place since 1999, the idea for the summit was first proposed by Vadim Zagladin and the Gorbachev Foundation.

 

WHO health ministers meet in Manila

Health ministers from East Asia and the Western Pacific are meeting in Manila to review the World Health Organization's work against health and lifestyle problems in the region. Dr Shin Young-soo, Regional Director for the Western Pacific, will report on WHO's performance in delivering its health programmes, covering areas including blindness prevention, ageing and health, hepatitis B control and health systems strategies.

 

Angelina Jolie movie being filmed in Australia

The filming of Unbroke n, directed by US actress Angelina Jolie, is set to begin in Australia. Based on a book by Laura Hillenbrand, the world war two drama tells the story of Louis Zamperini, the Olympian runner turned bombardier who spent two years as a prisoner of war after being shot down in the Pacific. With shooting taking place in Sydney and the Gold Coast, the movie is scheduled for release in the US on 25 December 2014.

 

Breast cancer campaign Wear It Pink under way

The Wear It Pink campaign to raise funds for breast cancer research is under way around the world. Despite recent advances, breast cancer remains the most common cancer and claims the lives of 12,000 women, with 50,000 more being diagnosed with the condition, according to the Breast Cancer Campaign, which organises the event.

 

Poland and South Korea discuss co-operation

Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski is making a four-day state visit to South Korea for a summit with President Park Geun-hye about economic and security co-operation. The visit is Komorowski's first trip to South Korea since he took office three years ago. He will also be the first European head of state to make a state visit to the country under the Park administration, presidential spokeswoman Kim Haing said.

 

Two in court in case linked to UK soldier murder

Two British Muslims linked to a man suspected of killing British soldier Lee Rigby in London in May are due to appear in court for a plea hearing. Ibrahim Abdullah-Hassan and Shah Jalal Hussain face charges brought under the UK's Terrorism Act.
