Three Hong Kong festivals for fans of electronic music, from commercial to underground
Road to Ultra, Delta Open Air and Creamfields will be bringing the noise between now and December, as electronic music continues to grow in popularity in the city
Last year’s Road to Ultra Hong Kong was a success, and this year’s will be twice the size.
Electronic music continues to go from strength to strength in Hong Kong, and after a solid start to the year thanks to the debut edition of Sónar, fans have a bunch of other festivals to look forward to until the end of 2017.
Whether you’re into commercial EDM or underground techno, there’s a festival to suit all dance music fans. Here are three to watch in the coming months.
Road to Ultra Hong Kong
After last year’s successful debut event, Road to Ultra – a smaller-scale spin-off of the massive EDM festival brand Ultra – is returning to Hong Kong (one week after Ultra makes its mainland China debut in Shanghai from September 9-10). Organisers say this year’s Road to Ultra Hong Kong will be twice the size of the debut event, and the line-up is so far being headed by Dutch electro house DJ Hardwell, Norwegian DJ/producer Kygo and German EDM star Zedd.

Delta Open Air
The black sheep on this list of Hong Kong dance music festivals, Delta Open Air focuses on underground electronic music instead of the commercial EDM featured at the rest of these events. The promoters Delta have in recent months bought the likes of German techno icons Marcel Dettmann and Answer Code Request to our shores, and their second outdoor event – to be held at a secret location – is being headlined by French techno artists Antigone and Francois X.

Creamfields Hong Kong
Creamfields has evolved into one of the world’s largest electronic dance music festivals since its launch in the UK in 1998, and it will be making its Hong Kong debut this December. Details of the venue and ticketing have yet to be announced, but the line-up is out – and it’s shaping up to be the biggest EDM event the city has seen, including the likes of Dutch EDM god Tiësto, English progressive trance group Above & Beyond, mysterious DJ/producer Marshmello and rising Dutch star R3hab.
