Dating tradition may dictate that the man makes the first move, but sometimes a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do.
Anthony Hill liked Fiona Ellis the moment he spotted her on the dance floor of a SoHo bar two years ago. But he hesitated to make a move and suddenly she was gone.
Luckily, Fiona returned minutes later, made a beeline for Anthony and introduced herself.
"I loved the way she came up to me and asked for my number. Then she texted me and asked me out," Anthony said. "I remember e-mailing one of my friends the next day, saying I had just met my dream girl."
Anthony, the creative director of menswear brand Hill, and Fiona, a human resources professional, tied the knot at the Hullett House hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui on October 17, celebrating with about 70 friends and relatives, many of whom flew in to Hong Kong from overseas.
"I adored Anthony as soon as I met him," Fiona said. "He immediately won me over with his sincerity and sense of humour, and the more we realised we had in common, the more our relationship made perfect sense."
Soon after they met, they decided to go on a proper first date. The pair met in a bar and Fiona arrived early. When Anthony saw her sipping wine from across the street, he knew he had found the one.
"I thought to myself: 'Wow, this girl is absolutely stunning,'" he said.
They dined like locals at the Kau Kee soup noodle restaurant in Sheung Wan, danced the night away and talked until sunrise.
"We had already planned our second and third dates before the night ended," Fiona said.
The couple love going to the beach, and during one camping trip to Sai Kung, Fiona awoke at sunrise and found a proposal written in the sand. She said yes immediately.
"I love the fact that although Fiona was just 24 when we met, she had travelled the world, lived in Beijing and had just moved to Hong Kong to take a new job," Anthony said. "I love the support and encouragement she showers on me every day. She is such an inspiration to me and, since I've been with her, I feel anything is possible."
Fiona loves Anthony's determination.
"It is rare that you meet someone with such genuine creativity and the drive to share that with the world," she said.
The couple spent their honeymoon in Sri Lanka, spending time on the beach and visiting the Ceylon Tea Trails.
