41 flights to take off from Hong Kong’s Kai Tak runway this weekend

The Red Bull Flugtag has returned to Hong Kong. Here is a sneak peek at some of the past and present magnificent men and their flying machines

Wacky and wonderful home-made aircraft will hit Hong Kong’s old Kai Tak runway next Sunday for the annual Red Bull Flugtag. The media had a sneak peek at some of the 41 flying machines on Sunday before the city’s third event (in 2010, Hong Kong became the first city in Asia to host Red Bull Flugtag at the West Kowloon Heliport and in 2014 had its second edition at the New Central Harbourfront Promenade.) It will be the first time a plane has taken off from the Kai Tak runway since the airport closed in 1998.

The rules are simple: each team is made up of one pilot and three ground crew. The self-made flying machine must be within six metres long, six metres wide and three metres high and weigh less than 100kg. The aircraft must be powered by human force: no motors, rockets, battery power or sneaky elastic bands. Teams who enter the Red Bull Flugtag 2016 competition are judged in three categories: distance, creativity and pre-take off performance.

The first contest took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992 and has been held each year in more than 40 countries including Singapore, the US, Australia and New Zealand. In 2013, a world record flight of 78.68m was set in Long Beach, California.
