GET THE LOOK PASTELS
Divia Harilela divia.harilela@scmp.com

Pastels have come a long way in the fashion world. Once associated with frumpy and frilly clothing, recent seasons have seen designers experiment with them in unexpected ways to create sleek, contemporary looks. For spring-summer 2013, Miu Miu, Alexander Wang and Fendi updated their pastel separates, using them on leather separates for a tough edge. Other designers used tricks such as layering or light and airy fabrics to make the look more modern. Dries Van Noten (pictured) sent out mint dresses in sheer chiffon while Givenchy's sky blue dresses and tops came with architectural ruffles. A word of advice: avoid the head-to-toe look. Instead, break it up with neutrals like beige and black or match them with metallics for a futuristic look.

Make a statement in these butterfly sunglasses featuring pastel-coloured metal (HK$3,800) straight off Christian Dior's runway.

Rupert Sanderson's laser-cut Floria sandals (HK$6,580) are given a seasonal update in blue suede.

Choose a handbag with a modern, structured shape such as Balenciaga's new Tube Round style (HK$14,300) in pastel pink.

Go for John Hardy's simple yet elegant gold Citrine earrings with orange sapphires (HK$62,700) from the Cinta collection.
