Hong Kong designers will this week host a group show at New York Fashion Week with the aim of building on the success of Vivienne Tam to secure the city’s position on the international fashion map.

Tam's recent spring/summer 2016 collection showed she still has plenty to offer after decades in the business which have made her a household name. Inspired by the androgynous fashions of the 1920s and by modern street culture, the collection was peppered with sporty references - still a big trend in New York.

The focus was on easy and relaxed silhouettes, including drop-waist dresses paired with bomber jackets (some emblazoned with the word  “Tam” on the back) and unisex jumpsuits in graphic colours such as black and white, red, green and fluorescent pink and green.  Power mesh was contrasted with striped menswear shirting for a cool mix of masculine and feminine.

Tam's signature East-meets-West style was also in evidence. Floral and dragon motifs appeared on dresses with ruffled sleeves and hems; mahjong tiles came printed on jackets or appeared as eyelets on a dramatic evening gown that closed the show.
