5 things you need to know about the YSL Paris show - with Slimane gone, what did Vaccarello unveil?

At one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the fashion season, the excitement was palatable tonight at Yves Saint Laurent’s Spring Summer 2017 runway when new designer - a young Italian - Anthony Vaccarello took the reigns for the first time at the storied French maison.

1. A giant, glowing neon, classic YSL logo was hoisted on a crane outside the cavernous show venue. Many of the audience noted in social media the ‘Yves’ had been put back into ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ under Vaccarello, after being taken out of the official label name by ex-designer Slimane who had renamed the brand Saint Laurent Paris. Leather pockets holding ticket invites said ‘Saint Laurent’ though. Confused? You’re not alone.

2. 80s power shoulders are back in a major way. Vaccarello’s love for this silhouette follows on nicely from Slimane last two collections, which also mined high octane 80s glamour. And this wasn’t the only way the two designers cross referenced certain elements of style.

3. YSL is definitely back to black - apart from occasional sequins, a velvet animal print or liquid gold, looks were largely limited to all black, with leather jackets making for a very precise, rock ‘n’ roll, tailored vibe.

4. We all got an eyeful as liberal flashes of skin came with sheer shirts, laces and micro-miniskirts. There was even sequinned nipple stickers for breast baring looks - the outfits borrow from the same powerful, sexy attitude that pervades Vaccarello’s own eponymous label.

5. We saw no handbags, but judging from those YSL logo heels, logo earrings and gemstone ear cuffs, we’re not short of statement accessories at this brand come next spring.
