Dorset cereals Tasty Toasted Spelt Flakes
HK$85 for 690 grams, City'super
Spelt is the distant cousin of modern wheat - an ancient grain with a rich, nutty flavour. This British product blends spelt flakes with roasted hazelnuts and almonds, pumpkin seeds, juicy pineapple, dates and flame raisins.
Verdict: I expected spelt to taste like cardboard, but the toasted and malted spelt flakes are slightly crisp and sweet, and complement the chewy dried fruits and crunchy nuts perfectly.
Biona Organic Spelt Spaghetti
HK$45 for 500 grams, Just Green
Spelt is said to contain more protein and vitamins than wheat. Although not gluten free, it can be tolerated by some people with wheat allergies - meaning this product could appeal to those who can't stomach typical durum wheat pasta.
Verdict: has a rougher texture and is heavier than regular pasta, which may not appeal to everyone.
Seitenbacher Musli #1 Natural Body Power
HK$71.50 for 454 grams, Gourmet
This all natural cereal from Germany is targeted at "active and sporty men and women". It combines wholegrain spelt with raisins, wholegrain oats, peanuts, sunflower seeds, barley flakes, apples, hazelnuts and wheat germ.
Verdict: muesli tends to be dry, but this mix has just the right balance of natural sweetness and moistness. Instantly jazzes up plain yogurt.
