Time to get healthy: three fitness apps for Apple Watch

Thanks to its ability to tap you on the wrist - something known as haptic feedback - Apple Watch is being talked up as a watershed moment for fitness apps

FitStar Yoga

Taking a yoga session via a smartphone app makes little sense, but on a smartwatch, it almost works. FitStar Yoga takes you through a customisable routine, with a simple graphic showing you exactly how to strike a pose, and how many more seconds you need to hold it for. It's a great idea and a welcome change from the plethora of running apps. There's only one problem: glancing at a watch while doing downward dog could bring you crashing to the ground.

LifeSum

If you're counting calories, you need to log them into your body as well as out. A popular phone app, LifeSum is surprisingly minimalist; its main screen displays how many calories you have left to burn that day, how far you are towards your exercise goal and how much water you've drunk. Adding a glass of water is done with a simple tap on the watch, while its frequent reminders and advice are useful for staying motivated.

Runtastic Six Pack

Much like FitStar Yoga, this personal trainer app lets you glance at a graphic of exactly how to perform gym exercises that have been tailored for you. Runtastic Six Pack is built around a 10-week training plan for your abs. The selling point is the way it combines the Apple Watch's haptic sensor and accelerometer. Each time you finish a set of reps, the watch vibrates against your skin. Also available for Apple Watch is the original Runtastic app, which uses GPS to map a run.
