La Crêperie’s sweet and savoury crêpes are hot in Hong Kong

Wander around Paris and you can hardly walk a couple of blocks without passing a crêpe stand.

Yann Blandford, owner of La Crêperie, says crêpes make a good snack or meal whatever time of day it is. “This food is perfect for lunch, an informal tea break or a hearty dinner with friends.”

Hong Kong diners are clearly in agreement, as Blandford now has three outlets — in Wan Chai, Sheung Wan and, most recently, Causeway Bay — after opening the first La Crêperie in Hong Kong just five years ago.

The restaurants specialise in crêpes and galettes, which Blandford describes respectively as “sweet thin pancakes made of wheat flour and savoury thin buckwheat flour pancakes”, and are traditional to Brittany in France’s northwest.

For an afternoon pick-me-up, Blandford suggests Le Defi, a sweet crêpe with house-made salted butter caramel, caramelised bananas and caramel ice cream. His savoury choice is La Complète, a breakfast-like galette “made of gluten-free buckwheat flour, filled with imported Emmental cheese, French cooked ham and a egg, sunny-side up”.

The best drink to go with the food, he says, is the Brittany cider that he imports from France. There is a choice of sweet or savoury (both are slightly alcoholic). Coffee is made with beans from France’s Cafés Richard.
