"I have been a vegetarian for 20 years now and enjoy different cuisines, but my preferences are Italian, Japanese and home-style Cantonese. But every country has something unforgettable that tells a little story about their culture.
I think what's most important in a restaurant is that something has to make me want to return and enjoy the place again, whether it's the food, vibe, staff or the environment.
I tend to be drawn to places that have more of an earthy feel and project a certain warmth. The places I frequent most include Life (10 Shelley Street, Central tel: 2810 9777), a vegetarian restaurant that has been around for 10 years. It is in the heart of SoHo, very convenient, and has a lovely, warm interior that makes you feel cosy. I love reading the books they have there.
They serve a variety of dishes so it's easy for anyone to find something they like. You can't go wrong with the island salad, eggplant dip, deli salad, daily soups or dhal, the African stew or the mushroom pizza.
Tosca (102/F, The Ritz-Carlton, ICC, 1 Austin Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2263 2270) also has a to-die-for vegetarian menu. All the dishes look and taste divine. Overall, it's just breathtaking being in such a spacious interior with that unforgettable view. I order the tomato mozzarella with a mozzarella martini and spaghetti aglio olio.
Another place I like is the Lock Cha Tea Shop in Admiralty (KS Lo Gallery, Hong Kong Park, tel: 2801 7177). Superbly authentic, they serve great dim sum and teas.
For a quick salad, soup or juice, I go to Cafe O (2 Arbuthnot Road, Central, tel: 2868 0450). It's always good to visit after a yoga class.
Outside Hong Kong, the Coffee Shop (29 Union Square West, tel: 212 243 7969) in New York City has a cool, grungy atmosphere. I love the Brazilian cheese bread, stir-fried kale and brown rice with black beans.
The Red O is an authentic Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles (8155 Melrose Avenue, tel: 323 655 5009) with beautiful decor, great cocktails and tasty fresh corn and goat cheese tamales.
Being half-German, I love Zum Straubinger (Blumenstrasse 5, tel: 49 89 232 2380), a traditional Bavarian restaurant in the centre of Munich. The food is always excellent."
