On my first two visits to Wonderdog, I was there to watch my friend feed his late-night craving. Both times, he had the Mushroom Dog (HK$50, regular), which is topped with button mushrooms, black fungus, caramelised onions, melted cheddar and "wonder sauce".
His satisfied expression, the chilled-out ambience, the playful pop art on the orange wall and the menu made me want to try it for myself, so I did.
You can choose from a "regular" eight-inch (20cm) dog, or a "mini" four-inch dog. For an extra HK$10, you get an 8½-inch cheese dog. I was tempted to try the Devil Dog (HK$48, regular), but it came with a warning: "This hot dog is Frigging Spicy!!!"
So I went for the HK Bolognese (HK$32, mini) instead. It's topped with a rich, meaty sauce and melted cheddar, which goes well with the sausage's crunchy skin.
My guest liked her Wasa Dog (HK$48, regular) with Japanese-inspired toppings such as seaweed and pickled cabbage. The crunchy rice added welcome texture. The green "wasayo" sauce has a catchy name, but the wasabi flavour isn't very sharp.
The Haha Dog (HK$52, regular) contains grilled prawns, pineapple and lettuce, while the B.E.T. (HK$50, regular) has bacon, scrambled eggs, tomato and paprika - both creative combinations. There's also the option to build your own custom hotdog.
For an additional HK$12, you can add regular fries or a salad with vinaigrette, and a drink. The fries, and Buffalo wings (HK$28 for three pieces), however, were beyond soggy.
