Hong Kong's City University Hall Roof Collapses, Injures At Least 3

A photo circulating on WhatsApp taken by a City U student captures the scene after the collapse.

The entire roof of City University’s Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall collapsed at around 2:30pm on Friday afternoon. At least three people were reported injured, including a cafeteria manager and maintenance worker. The hall is usually used for examinations and ceremonies, and can hold at least 900 people.

The examination period is over and the venue was closed for renovations.

“It was like an earthquake," said City U student Erin Chan, who witnessed the collapse. Student TJ Blitzer, who was working out in a nearby on-campus gym, said he heard what sounded like an explosion—he was ushered out of the area just after the collapse.

The CityU Secrets Facebook page, a community page where students often complain about university policies, has been flooded with angry comments.

Brian Wong comments: "The whole ceiling just… disappeared. Each of us are paying them a few hundred thousand dollars [in tuition], and they still can’t get the roof right."

Andy Lam says that "if this happened a week earlier during the exam period, it would've caused many serious casualties."
