I like the look of velvet shoes and want to find a pair for myself this winter. Tell me, are they meant for formal occasions only?
Mr Dandy: Hello? What century are you living in? Rules are meant to be broken! Even old Canali's doing tasseled loafers in black velvet with leather trim (HK$5,000; IFC Mall, Central, tel: 2118 5718). But don't stop there. Add some colour with a pair of bright, floral-embroidered velvet slippers by Alberto Moretti for Arfango (HK$5,995; The Swank, The Landmark, Central, tel: 2810 0769) or some studded ochre ones by Giacomorelli, which also does burgundy velvet high-tops (HK$4,795 to HK$5,295; The Swank). Yes, the Albert slipper loafer is hot right now. Versace's comes in navy or black, embroidered with the medusa medallion logo in gold (HK$5,800; Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2918 1008). Dolce & Gabbana is rocking devore velvet lace-ups in black or wine-red, with the most impressive ones having baroque gold embroidery (HK$5,900 to HK$17,700; Pacific Place, tel: 2525 5815). Fendi's blue floral lace-ups are understatedly awesome (HK$6,880; The Landmark, tel: 2524 1339). And the best part? You don't need to bring out the penguin suit! Wear them with slacks, suits or, better yet, jeans.
Mr Dapper: I maintain that suede is a far more appropriate choice for winter daywear. But as I cannot deny the velvet-slipper trend, I will at least beg you to opt for quality, as found in Edward Green's black loafers (HK$4,000; Tassels, The Landmark, tel: 2789 9911) and Church's green or red versions (HK$1,950; Prince's Building, Central, tel: 2536 0462).
I like to wear 100 per cent cotton undershirts to keep warm in winter and to soak up sweat in the summer. To keep the undershirt hidden, I prefer V-necks over crew necks. In the past, I have worn the Italian brand Cagi and, more recently, Zegna. But now I cannot find them anywhere. Any ideas?
Mr Dapper: Sir, although I appreciate your exacting tastes, I fail to understand why this particular product search has posed a problem. As you may have noted previously, I highly recommend Zimmerli of Switzerland. A small selection of its underwear is now sold at UM (The Landmark, tel: 2522 0198), including fine cotton and micromodal V-neck undershirts (HK$970 to HK$980). Too many other brands insist on using logos or decorative details, which run the risk of showing through one's dress shirt.
Mr Dandy: Seriously. Are you too good for Calvin Klein Underwear's two-pack cotton V-necks (HK$320; Times Square, Causeway Bay, tel: 2526 8808)? Jac5 has them in cotton or modal with elastane (about HK$195 and up; 81 Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan, tel: 2545 6100). Armani (Chater House, Central, tel: 2532 7711) is selling black, white or even green V-necks for HK$430 with a little eagle logo on your left pec. Or buy online! OK, granted, I had trouble finding a good site for that Italian brand Cagi that you mentioned. But mrporter.com 's got handmade ones by Sunspel in ridiculously soft black or white cotton (HK$369 each). Almost everyone is delivering to Hong Kong these days, including Macy's www.macys.com .
