I've been really inspired by the corset dresses I've seen in ad campaigns recently. Who makes the best ones for me to try on?
Bust to Move, Kowloon
The Dictator rules: What are you talking about? You should try on all of them. First stop: Burberry, whose spring-summer campaign famously featured Romeo Beckham and model-of-the-moment, Cara Delevingne. Its bustier dresses and coats have been selling like hotcakes (HK$16,500 to HK$24,500; Ocean Centre, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2377 3031). The idea is that everyone is a different shape. Unless you find a label that cuts exactly for your body type, you'll never know if a dress fits properly until you try it on. Even then, you should have alterations made for the perfect fit. Next, strap yourself into a beautifully constructed Alexander McQueen dress in black satin or leather (HK$18,000 to HK$35,900; Elements, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon, tel: 2649 3098). Or, slip into the stretchy - by Willow (HK$7,000; Harvey Nichols, The Landmark, Central, tel: 3695 3388). A number of designers are doing them, including Calvin Klein, Jil Sander, Prabal Gurung, Balmain and Rochas. Can't credit-card couture corsetry? OK, reliably cheap source asos.com has you covered (or not) for about HK$600 and up. Now, make it fresh and current, not trashy, by avoiding the clichés. Take Burberry's lead. Go for wedges instead of stilettos, bare legs rather than fishnets, and add colour versus going all black.
I loved Julianne Hough's edgy look at the Golden Globes, especially the jewellery she wore on top of her ear. What's that called and where can I get one?!
Hard of Earring, Robinson Road
The Dictator: You liked that? Most people thought it was a weird look for the otherwise sweet, All-American dancer-turned-actress. Don't worry, I liked how the Rock of Ages and Dancing with the Stars favourite challenged the norm, too, and I know where you can find one. They're called ear cuffs. Quite a few celebs have been rockin' the look, such as Rihanna, Miranda Kerr, Jessie J, Alicia Keys and Halle Berry. Julianne Hough's cuffs at this year's Golden Globes were a collaboration with Daniela Villegas (www.danielavillegas.com ). It was a one-of-a-kind sparkly stick-insect cuff made to go with the beetle earrings Hough wore, also by the Los Angeles-based jeweller. But you don't need to waste your time and money trying to get your hands on fine jewellery. Test the trend first with affordable versions by the likes of H&M, where you can buy a four-pack consisting of gold and silver cuffs, plus silver skull and gold hoop earrings (HK$59.90; 68 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2110 9546). We saw some great ones at Dendy Fashion Accessories (HK$32 to HK$66 per pair; 3 Wing Kut Street, Central, tel: 2543 8989); designs include fun dangling motifs, such as the Eiffel Tower. At urbanoutfitters.com you'll find lots more, including designs by celeb favourite Maria Francesca Pepe (HK$660).
