Behind the label: Vika Gazinskaya

Pavan Shamdasani

Who started it? One of a new breed of Slavic designers bringing fresh blood to the style world, Vika Gazinskaya is part of what fashion bloggers have deemed "the Russian pack". She studied fashion design at Moscow State University and, after graduating in 2000, landed a fashion-assistant job at the Russian edition of L'Officiel. She quit in 2004 and launched her own label a year later.

Why we love it: Gazinskaya's pieces are far from your stereotypical Russian designs: there are no furs here and the embellishments are subtle rather than screaming. The first few collections were heavily inspired by futurism (with influences ranging from Rem Koolhaas to Radiohead), but the newer collections are a bit more discreet, with lots of edgy silhouettes.

What we'd pick: The spring-summer 2013 collection blends the best of past and present, with an even mix of space-age looks and feminine forms, both inspired by her recent travels. We particularly like the wide-shouldered grey cropped top (HK$11,900), paired with a similarly patterned skirt in white (HK$14,000; both left). We also like two of the more colourful options, featuring childish landscape scenes: the dress (above far right; HK$25,300), and the similarly "doodled" top (HK$7,800) and matching skirt (HK$8,950; both above right).

Where can you get it? Vika Gazinskaya is available at Joyce, Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2523 5944.
