Court date for cabbie accused of fare scam
A taxi driver accused of overcharging an undercover policeman posing as a tourist will appear in Kowloon City Court tomorrow. The 48-year-old man allegedly charged his passenger HK$100 for a HK$50 trip on Tuesday night then drove away after being handed a HK$500 note.
Private doctor ticked off for allergy blunder
The director of a private health care centre has been reprimanded by the Medical Council for prescribing a drug even though he knew the patient was allergic to it. Dr Dominic Yan Wai-man, of the Quality Healthcare Medical Centre in Tsuen Wan, was said to have been distracted when he gave Man Ka-wing an anti-inflammatory drug for back pain. The patient ended up in hospital with swollen eyelids.
Smugglers flee in boats as police grab payload
Marine police and customs officers seized HK$5 million worth of electronic products and confiscated a car in Sai Kung early yesterday. The smugglers abandoned the goods and escaped on three speedboats as police moved in.
Formaldehyde alert over, says university
The University of Hong Kong has told students it is now safe to move into new residential halls that had earlier been ruled out of bounds due to excessive formaldehyde levels.
