Singapore lifts ban on 'offensive' satirical film

SINGAPORE - The government yesterday lifted a ban on a satirical film deemed "offensive" to the Indian community, but said producers would have to edit some portions and show it only to adults. The ban was slapped on Sex.Violence.Family Values after a panel found some dialogue to be unacceptable. It was particularly concerned by a story about an ethnic Indian hired for an X-rated film. AFP

Sri Lanka's top judge impeached

COLOMBO - Sri Lanka's parliament voted to impeach the country's chief justice, disregarding rulings from the Supreme Court that the process was illegal and threatened judicial independence. The parliament, dominated by a coalition headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa's party, impeached Shirani Bandaranayake, Sri Lanka's first female chief justice, with 155 votes in favour, above the simple majority in the 225-member legislature. Her impeachment has stirred protests by lawyers, opposition lawmakers and religious leaders. Reuters

600 more Rohingya caught in Thailand

BANGKOK - At least 600 Rohingya Muslims believed to be illegal migrants from Myanmar have been detained in Thailand after two raids near the border with Malaysia. More than 300 Rohingya were discovered in the town of Sadao, while a second raid on Thursday at a rubber plantation near the border town of Pedang Besar uncovered 393 more. They will be sent back to Myanmar. Reuters
