China’s Chris Lee wins MTV EMA Best Worldwide Act award

Chinese pop singer Chris Lee has won the Best Worldwide Act award at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards, becoming the third Asian artist in a row to win.

Pop singer, songwriter and actor Chris Lee, 29, known as Li Yuchun in mainland China, edged out Justin Bieber, Cody Simpson, and other eight artists to win the award at the 2013 MTV EMA on Monday in Amsterdam.

“Thank you MTV. Thank you, all my fans. Thank you all the people who love Chinese music. Enjoy the night, enjoy the music. I love you! Thank you very much!” Lee said on the stage after accepting the trophy.

The news was posted on Chinese social media Sina Weibo and soon generated almost 6,000 comments. So far, it has been reposted over 10,000times.

The winner of the Best Worldwide Act award is chosen by fans from around the world and posts on social media show that Lee, representing mainland China, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and Taiwan, received more than 100 million votes.

Lee was the winner of the 2005 Super Girl, a nationwide singing competition in China. In 2006, her first album Queen and Dreams achieved sales of 1.37 million. Her fans are known as “corns”, pronounced “yu mi” in Chinese, which sounds like “fans of Yu”.

“We’re absolutely delighted to hear of Chris Lee’s win!” Indra Suharjono, Viacome International Media Networks Asia’s executive vice president and managing director, wrote it a press release. “We will continue to elevate more Asian artists at international platforms and grow the awareness and appreciation of Asian music and artists for fans around the world to enjoy.”

The 2013 MTV EMA airs today at 9pm Hong Kong time.
