2 arrested for stabbing tourists at sacred site

Two men turned themselves in to police yesterday for stabbing tourists at a sacred mountain near Huayin city, Shaanxi province. Villagers Liu Weijun, 28, and Wang Qi, 20, were detained for assault. They were said to have stabbed Dong Liwen and his wife, Wang Jiao, from the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on Tuesday at Mount Huashan. Police said Liu and Wang quarrelled with Dong in a ticket office queue. Dong has said he was attacked by about 20 people, including security guards, after asking for a refund. Mimi Lau, Xinhua

China offers 3b yuan Asean maritime fund

China has offered a 3 billion yuan (HK$3.67 billion) maritime co-operation fund for the 10-member Asean bloc, some of whose members have territorial disputes with China. Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh said China announced the fund in Manila at the inaugural maritime forum of Asean and eight partners, including Japan, China, South Korea and the US. Pham says Asean and China are discussing possible activities to finance. AP

Wang Dan worried by attitude to mainlanders

Exiled dissident Wang Dan said closer interaction between Taiwan and the mainland was causing growing contempt of mainlanders among the island's residents, referring to similar tensions in Hong Kong. "I am very concerned. I don't want to see confrontation between the people," said Wang, a student leader in Tiananmen in 1989. Last year, more than 1.7 million mainlanders visited the island. "China's economic rise and strong power can't cover up people's behaviour and manners," said Wang. AFP
