Online shopping in China has evolved into a multibillion dollar industry. But even as more consumers take to the internet to make purchases on everything from t-shirts to auto-parts, one crucial component of this supply-chain has failed to keep up.
Investigative reporting from China Central Television recently exposed “hidden secrets” in the country’s undeveloped courier service industry. Secret footage obtained from undercover reporters documented the chaos in China's package sorting centres.
Boxes heavy and light haphazardly dumped one on top of each other, creating cluttered piles in the middle of the sorting floor while workers are seen hurling parcels across the sorting floor into containers regardless of whether they are marked fragile.
Crushed and dented boxes are tossed into the backs of trucks, while envelopes are thrown around like frisbees. One scene even shows a worker kicking packages into a container. Theft is also said to be a recurrent problem.
Courier staff say that as long as recipients receive and sign for packages, the responsibility is no longer theirs. As a result, most customers end up blaming the merchant.
