Jiang Feng Dolby, the nominal owner of a French villa that has become key evidence in Bo Xilai's trial, broke her silence yesterday, professing her love for the Dalian entrepreneur who prosecutors say played "money man" to Bo's family.
Jiang, a former China Central Television anchor, has often been portrayed on the internet as Xu's Ming's mistress and a gold digger.
Testimony has revealed that Jiang is the nominal owner of a luxury villa in Cannes bought by Xu on behalf of Bo's wife Gu Kailai in 2001. The villa returned to Xu's ownership in 2011 and was later passed to Jiang.
She shrugged off the controversy yesterday and said her love for Xu was real.
"I wouldn't have fallen in love with someone just because he is rich," she wrote in her verified Sina Weibo account. "By the same token, I would never turn somebody down just because he is not rich.
"In a love story between a single woman and a single man, there is no place for words like ' er nai' [mistress], ' xiao san' [kept woman] or ' bang da kuan' [gold digger]," she said.
Xu - a civil servant turned millionaire - is alleged to be the financier of Bo's family. He was once considered one of China's richest tycoons, but was detained on suspicion of bribery and running an illegal operation following Bo's downfall.
Jiang said she had nothing to hide.
"I lead a natural and authentic life, without anything to show off or to hide from," Jiang said. "My words come from the bottom of my heart and they are not meant to challenge or please anyone."
In a separate posting, she hit out at the media for untruthful reports about her life.
"[You] should not have blind faith in media - even those media from Britain or the USA," she said. "Not all the stuff they print is true, or correct, not to mention comprehensive.
"I trust reporters from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Telegraph may have done some homework, but the information available to them is limited. I'm neither willing or under obligation to answer reporters' questions or to correct their reports."
Jiang became a British citizen by marriage in 2004 and has two children.
