What is claimed to be the world’s highest bridge has opened in southwest China.

The Beipanjiang Bridge, which spans a gorge between Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, opened on Thursday, the China News Service reported.

The structure stands 565 metres above the valley floor and stretches 1.34 km, the report said.

The four-lane bridge cost just over 1 billion yuan (HK$1.1 billion) to build and took four years to complete, according to the article.

It could shorten travelling times from Xuanwei in Yunnan to Liupanshui in Guizhou from five hours to one hour.

The structure was designed to resist strong winds and has overcome a number of technical challenges to span the steep gorge, the report said.

The bridge is expected to serve as a major transportation hub linking impoverished Guizhou to highway networks in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
