It was a big celebration for eight couples who tied the knot in a group ceremony at a scenic spot in Chongqing on Sunday – all of them from the same university class.

In fact the class of 43 students produced 15 couples over four years of campus life at the university in Chengdu, Sichuan province, according to media reports.

Class monitor and one of the bridegrooms, Liu Chao, not his real name, organised the special graduation trip and group wedding, Chengdu Evening News reports.

Liu told the newspaper he had been planning the event since April. But he was taking a chance – he didn’t run it past his girlfriend until two days before the event. Luckily she said “yes”.

One bridegroom said he thought it was a great idea – and it certainly won over his new wife. “We rarely surprise each other, but girls all like a bit of romance.”

But weddings can be expensive, especially for a group of recent graduates, so they decided to cut costs by renting their wedding dresses and inviting friends to help host the event and shoot videos. The tourist site even waived entry fees for the special occasion.

Nearly the whole class attended the morning ceremony and it cost about 600 yuan (US$87) per person, Liu said.

The graduates studied engineering cost management but some on social media joked that it sounded like they majored in eliminating singles.
