Eight men broke into a former Russian aircraft carrier after swimming in the Yangtze River because they wanted to take a look inside before it opens as a tourist attraction in eastern China, according to a news website report.

The authorities were only alerted to what the men had done after they shared selfies of themselves online inside the ship, Yzwb.net reports.

The Minsk is to go on display in Nantong in Jiangsu province as part of a military theme park.

The men walked 3km along the river bank at night, then swam for 500 metres to get to the warship, according to the article.

They then broke a lock to get inside.

The pictures they took can no longer be found online.

The Minsk served in the Soviet and Russian navies between 1978 and 1994 before it was decommissioned.

It was previously docked in Shenzhen in Guangdong province after it was refitted as a tourist attraction.

The Minsk is expected to be one of the centrepieces in a new 10 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion) theme park in a Nantong industrial park due to open next year, Chinese media have previously reported.
