A Chinese man has been given 15 days in detention for slapping a railway stewardess five times in the face after she told him he couldn’t sit in the train’s dining car, mainland media reported.

The incident happened on Friday morning as the man, surnamed Wang, was travelling through the northern province of Gansu, news portal Thepaper.cn reported on Saturday.

Wang, who works for the local railway bureau, asked the unnamed waitress to find him a seat in the dining carriage although he said he didn’t wish to eat. When she told him there was no room, he lost his temper, the report said.

In a video of the incident that was circulated online, the man can clearly be seen pushing the waitress in front of dozens of other passengers.

“Can I sit here? Can I sit here?” he yells, before slapping her five times.

The waitress is then seen sobbing with a hand covering her face.

Lanzhou Railway Police said in a social media post on Saturday that Wang had been punished with a 15-day detention and a 1,000 yuan (US$148) fine.
