Technician dies in hospital after torso was crushed by lift in tower block in Hangzhou

A young technician has died after getting his torso jammed between a residential elevator in Hangzhou in eastern China.
Police in the city in Zhejiang province found the man in his twenties on Wednesday evening stuck between two floors at around 5.30pm. He was removed by a firecrew and rushed to the hospital about half an hour later with his torso compressed and deformed, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.
“I thought it was just a routine maintenance so I went for the other elevator but I soon realised something was wrong,” according to a witness cited by the newspaper.
The witness, identified only by the surname Wu, had just returned from work. He said he realised the technician was stuck as he did not move or respond when he called to him.
“His entire body was purplish [when firemen got him out],” Wu said.
Surveillance footage had shown the technician, surnamed He, approaching the lifts at 4.49pm. He was first seen inspecting the elevator cabin and stepped outside five minutes later.
The fatal accident was not recorded by the camera but it is believed that he may have been trapped between the floors for at least 40 minutes.

Residents said the two Thyssenkrupp elevators in a building on a Xiasha district residential estate had undergone repeated maintenance before the tragedy.
People living in the 23-storey building currently have to use the stairs as the elevators have been sealed.
