Chinese student reported missing after disappearing from Japan home

A Chinese man studying at a university in Japan has become the subject of a missing persons inquiry after seemingly disappearing from his home about two weeks ago.

Feng Ruyi, 23, who was enrolled at Yokohama National University, was reported missing on August 15 when fellow students noticed the door to his rented flat close to the campus was open and the air conditioner was on, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Friday.

He had last been “seen” in a video call to his mother on August 10, the report said.

Feng’s parents travelled to Yokohama on August 19 to help look for their son. At his home they found an online booking confirmation for a September 30 flight to China, but his mobile phone, bank cards and passport were all missing. His laptop was also still open.

Police reviewed footage from surveillance cameras near Feng’s flat, but did not find anything significant, and are now looking into his bank records in the hope of finding a clue to his whereabouts, the report said.

A friend was quoted as saying that Feng was a hard working student, but “not too sociable”.

The case is the third involving Chinese nationals going missing in Japan this year.

Last month, the bodies of two sisters in their twenties from Fuzhou, capital of southeastern China’s Fujian province, were found in two suitcases dumped in the street. They had been strangled. Also in July, Wei Qiujie, a 27-year-old primary school teacher from Nanping in Fujian was reported missing while travelling alone in Japan. She has not been seen since leaving the hotel she was staying at in Sapporo without her luggage.
