Chinese police are on the hunt for a person who drilled a hole into the rear wall of a gold shop and made off with jewellery worth 3 million yuan (US$453,300).

The theft happened on Friday night in the city of Nanchong, southwestern China’s Sichuan province, local news website Chuanbao Guancha reported.

“Three million yuan worth of gold and diamond jewellery has been stolen,” Sichuan police confirmed on their official WeChat account.

The website report said the shop’s rear wall, which was made of brick, had a hole near the floor that was big enough for a person to crawl through.

Police said they were treating the case as a priority and were working to identify the person behind the robbery.
