Pair face court over acid attack on rural leader
Two men have been charged in connection with an acid attack on rural leader Man Kwai-ki in July 2010. Police arrested the pair at Shenzhen Bay Port yesterday. They will appear in Fanling Court today facing charges of violating the elections ordinance and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm. They are accused of attacking Man, 51, the former village representative of Mai Po Tsuen, in Shenzhen.
Father and son die in beach barbecue tragedy
A Nepalese family was yesterday mourning the death of a 35-year-old man and his five-year-old son after a barbecue outing to Butterfly Beach, Tuen Mun, with five others on Sunday. The pair went for a swim in the afternoon but the man got into difficulty and the boy disappeared. The man was unconscious when pulled from the water shortly before 6pm. He died at 8.17am yesterday in Tuen Mun Hospital. Divers found the boy's body at about 6am.
Three officers plead not guilty to injuring inmate
Three correctional services officers pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on a 33-year-old Taiwanese inmate, Chen Chu-nan, who was found dead in his cell on August 16. They were Leung Shing-chi, 46, So Ka-wai, 36, and Tang Yuk-po, 46. Police arrested Chen for obtaining property by deception on August 12, 2009.
Call for strike against national education
Concern group Socialist Action handed 4,600 signatures against the introduction of national education in schools to the Professional Teachers Union. It urged the union to call a strike by teachers and pupils against the subject's introduction at the start of the school year.
Fishing boat sinks after hit and run near Ninepins
A search was under way for a cargo vessel that collided with a 23-metre fishing boat near the Ninepin Islands before dawn, leaving five people with minor injuries.
Girls win eight medals at maths olympiad
Hong Kong secondary school pupils brought home a gold medal, a silver and six bronzes from the China Girls' Mathematical Olympiad, which was held in Guangzhou from Wednesday to Sunday.
