Parents want to know national education plan
A parents' group has called on school sponsoring body the Po Leung Kuk to declare whether it wants its schools to teach national education. The group protested outside TVB during the filming of a fundraising gala yesterday. One of the body's schools, the Hong Kong Taoist Association Yuen Yuen Primary School, has put a planned course with national education elements on hold, in the face of parents' opposition.

Physical and verbal abuse rife in schools
Nearly 70 per cent of pupils say they have experienced verbal abuse in schools, while more than 40 per cent say they have experienced bodily harm and more than 20 per cent of them have inflicted pain on others, according to a survey study conducted by Hong Kong Family Welfare Society of 1,500 primary and secondary school pupils. Most conflicts occurred in Primary Six and Form One.
Woman, 79, killed by young couple in car
A 79-year-old woman died after being hit by a car when crossing the road near Ping Tin Estate in Kwun Tong at around 9am. A 26-year-old woman claiming to be the driver and a 29-year-old man were arrested at the scene for perverting the course of justice. The man was also arrested for dangerous driving causing death, using a vehicle without third party insurance and driving while disqualified.
Online gambling den smashed, 14 arrested
Police arrested 14 people aged between 30 and 63 after smashing an online gambling den in Sham Shui Po. A 30-year-old man is suspected of running it. A total of HK$1,400 in cash, chips worth HK$80,000 and a computer containing records of HK$540,000 in bets were seized.
Attack on taxi driver, 60, in Cheung Sha Wan
A 60-year-old taxi driver was kicked by a man in his thirties after four passengers attacked his vehicle in Cheung Sha Wan early yesterday. One young man then turned on the driver before escaping the scene.
Construction worker injured by crane hook
A 54-year-old worker sustained facial injuries when he was hit by the swinging shank hook of a tower crane at a construction site in Tang Lung Street, Causeway Bay. He was rushed to hospital.
Cement truck catches fire in Tuen Mun
A cement truck caught fire after the driver pulled over in Tuen Mun. Engine failure was the suspected cause. Firemen extinguished the blaze.
