Two charged with stabbing murder
Two Nepali men were charged jointly with one count of murder yesterday for their alleged role in the death of another Nepali man, who was stabbed to death in a gang fight between two groups in Nam Pin Wai, Yuen Long, on Sunday. The pair, aged 20 and 24, were arrested with three other Nepali men on Monday. The remaining three, aged 21 to 25, were bailed and must report back early next month.
Newspaper fined for banner seen in photo
The Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao must pay HK$200,000 in compensation to Oriental Daily and its honorary chairman, Ma Ching-kwan, over defamatory remarks contained in a banner captured in a photo, the Court of Final Appeal ruled. The defamatory words in Chinese were plainly legible in the photo published on April 10, 1998. The banner was put up outside the High Court building by Ma Chiu-sing, who gave himself the nickname Hong Kong bin Laden.
Chapman To wins 'Gutbuster' award
Actor Chapman To Man-chat was honoured with best actor in the "gutbuster comedy features" category in the US-based Fantastic Fest for his role in Vulgaria. Fantastic Fest, billed as the largest genre film festival in the US specialising in horror, fantasy, sci-fi and action movies, opens today in Austin, Texas.
Albert Cheng faces gagging order
The High Court will hear an application today for an injunction to bar Albert Cheng King-hon, an outspoken radio host and shareholder of the Digital Broadcasting Corp, from publicly speaking on affairs related to the station, which is at risk of winding up. Cheng said DBC's major shareholder, Bill Wong Cho-bau, filed the application yesterday ahead of a scheduled board meeting today. Cheng, who had offered to sell his stake to Wong or buy Wong's at a discount, launched a 100-hour countdown on the station's closure yesterday .
Suspect arrested over Sheung Shui girl's rape
A 24-year-old man was arrested at his home yesterday on suspicion of raping a 12-year-old schoolgirl in Sheung Shui. The logistics worker was arrested within 24 hours of the attack being reported. Officers picked him up when he left his flat in the Ching Ping Estate. Last night he was being held for questioning and has not been charged. The girl was attacked as she left a lift in Ching Ping House at about 6.30pm on Tuesday.
