Home-baked cakes, home-cooked BBQ dinners, wine appreciation classes and a game of golf with the chairman - Rothschild's staff generously put their talents up for sharing at the financial advisory group's Christmas party and auction this month.
People bid enthusiastically as drinks flowed at the Disneyland Hotel, where glamour, glitz and giving was the theme of the night.
The staff were keen to show their support for Operation Santa Claus (OSC), one of their company's core charities. OSC is a 25-year-old annual charity drive organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK.
"OSC does an excellent job reminding everyone of the joys of giving and bringing together a strong community of donors," said Alfred Chan, a member of Rothschild's charity committee. "Rothschild is proud to be a supporter of OSC … It is important to give back to the community, regardless of market conditions."
The company's fundraising event was a team effort, with even staff from the firm's Beijing and Shanghai offices flying in for the party and offering up services for the auction including a tour of Shanghai, a makeover and a business portrait photo shoot.
"Team spirit is something that Rothschild values a lot," said Catherine Yien, Rothschild's chief operating officer.
Yien commended the staff for their effort, time and monetary support throughout the year with not just OSC, but also their charity efforts across the board including work with children as well as the global conservation body WWF.
She said staff members from the firm's Hong Kong and mainland offices were key in helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for OSC in the past six years.
"We don't really have to convince people to be involved," said Janice Chan, an associate in charge of the party. "We just ask."
"And the response is overwhelming," added Yien.
Rothschild, a major donor of OSC, will raise at least HK$150,000 for the 18 different charities supported by the appeal this year, including those serving underprivileged children, the elderly, victims of domestic violence and people with mental and physical disabilities.
