Love was in the air today among Cantonese speakers keen to marry.
It was an auspicious day because today's date when spoken aloud in Cantonese – as in "one three," "one four" or yat sang-yat sai – means life-long love until death.
The Immigration Department received 558 notices from couples wishing to register to be wed today. All 132 places at the city's five marriage registries were booked out by September 20 last year.
Interestingly, today was not as popular as 12 December 2012 when 680 couples married. And the all-time winner was 11 November 2011 when 1,002 couples tied the knot.
Video reporter Stephen Quinn visited the Cotton Tree Drive marriage registry in Hong Kong to watch the action.
