Woman 'punched and kicked to death'

A mentally disabled woman allegedly beaten to death by her flatmate because she could not take proper care of herself had almost 100 injuries, the Court of First Instance heard yesterday.

Kam Hui-yung, 35, had multiple abrasions, fractures and bleeding in her brain, prosecuting counsel Diane Crebbin told the court. She was opening the case against Ericis Mok Kwok-wai, 42, who has pleaded not guilty to one charge of murder.

Crebbin said Mok punched and kicked Kam over four days, leading to her death on September 9, 2011.

"Apparently part of the reason he did this was because Kam was of low intelligence and so was unable to do simple things to take care of herself, which really annoyed the defendant," Crebbin said. She said police were called by a woman seeking help at a flat in Mei Lam Estate, Sha Tin, at about noon on September 9.

Kam was found lying in the living room. She was not breathing, and was certified dead in hospital about three hours later.

"It was clear that the injuries had been inflicted over a period of time and most were consistent with the deceased having been forcefully beaten, punched and kicked," Crebbin said.

The court heard that Mok and Kam became friends in early 2011 when she was working as a cleaner. She later moved in with the defendant and his family.

The trial continues today.
