Woman denies laundering HK$6.8b

A public housing tenant pleaded not guilty to laundering about HK$6.8 billion between 2002 and 2005, the Court of First Instance heard yesterday. Lam Mei-ling, 62, who reported no income, allegedly made 22,214 deposits and 17,295 withdrawals through nine Hong Kong bank accounts, handling on average more than HK$5 million a day.

8 lifts suspended after North Point accident

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has halted the operations of eight lifts, mostly over rusty or substandard cables, maintained by Shineford Engineering. Inspectors had finished checking all 248 lifts under the contractor's maintenance since a lift in North Point fell on Saturday.

There were no winners of the first prize in last night's draw. The numbers were 4, 6, 8, 35, 36, 43. The extra number was 5. Second prize of HK$550,410 was won by 4.5 tickets. Third prize paid HK$65, 390.
