Work on extending the MTR Kwun Tong Line from Yau Ma Tei to Whampoa is now halfway to completion.
The 2.6-kilometre section, which will add two stops - Ho Man Tin and Whampoa - will open next year.
Part of the Ho Man Tin station is being built in a rock cavern. Blasting work has involved more than 1,000 explosions since June 2012 and is not scheduled to finish until June this year.
Project manager James Chow So-hung said the next steps would involve paving the tracks and installing the electronics.
The station, 30 metres underground, will have eight storeys, housing platforms and exits on different levels. It will link the Kwun Tong Line and Sha Tin-Central Link, the first phase of which will open in 2018.
Chow said the blasting had generated more than 700,000 cubic metres of rock, which was being taken to the Anderson Road quarry and made into concrete or landfill.
A 5,000 sq metre net covers the blast site to reduce dust and noise. Chow said the net also helped speed up the process.
He said residents had complained about noise in the beginning, but their complaints had been resolved by adjusting blasting times. The construction was more complicated than at other sites because it was very close to roads and houses.
The work on the Kwun Tong line is one of five extension projects being done by the MTR Corporation. The others are South Island Line (east); Sha Tin to Central Link; the express link from West Kowloon to Guangzhou; and West Island Line.
The West Island Line will extend the Island Line to Kennedy Town and is expected to open this year. It will add three stations - Sai Ying Pun, HKU and Kennedy Town.
Work on the South Island Line (East) is scheduled for completion in 2015. The line will link Admiralty to South Horizons with a 7km route via four new stations.
