Burglars ransack Sha Tin houses while tenants out on Father’s Day dinner

Burglars escaped with almost HK$460,000 in cash and valuables after ransacking two houses in Sha Tin on Sunday night, while their tenants were out for Father’s Day meals, police said on Monday.

In the first case, police believed that burglars pried open a first-floor toilet window to climb into one house and then left through ground-floor sliding doors that connected to the front yard of the property.

About HK$400,000 worth of jewellery and watches were stolen in this case on To Fung Shan Road, Sha Tin.

In the second break-in, a 50-year-old woman returned from dinner to find that her two-storey house in San Tin Wai New Village on Yiu Wai Street had been ransacked.

The front door was wide open when she returned home, and the balcony’s sliding door had been pried open, police said.

Police said jewellery valued at HK$55,000 and HK$1,000 in cash were stolen.

In both cases, officers mounted a search in the vicinity but no one was arrested. 

Police are investigating whether the two cases are linked.

In the first four months of this year, the city has reported 990 burglary cases, a 12.3 per cent drop compared to the 1,129 cases recorded for the same period last year.
