Toddler dies after being hit by Mercedes-Benz in Hong Kong

Driver was attempting a U-turn near the entrance of a Yuen Long village when the accident happened, police said

An 18-month-old boy has died in hospital about five hours after being knocked down by a Mercedes-Benz driven by his neighbour in Yuen Long on Monday afternoon

Police arrested the 55-year-old driver on suspicion of dangerous driving. He was being held for questioning on Monday night.

The black Mercedes-Benz was making a U-turn near the entrance of a village on Tai Shu Ha Road West at the time of the accident, which happened at about 2.15pm, according to police.

It was understood the right front wheel hit Tang Man-fai in front of his parents, both aged 35. The pair know the driver.

Suffering serious head injuries, the toddler was taken unconscious to Pok Oi Hospital and later transferred to Tuen Mun hospital.

A government spokesman said the boy died in hospital at 7.57pm.

Officers from New Territories North traffic unit are investigating.
