A Hong Kong man was arrested in a police crackdown on drug trafficking on Saturday that netted suspected methamphetamine and cocaine valued at HK$10 million.
At around 9am Saturday, Narcotics Bureau officers intercepted the 38-year-old man, surnamed Chui, near Ting Kok Road in Tai Po.
About 60g of cocaine and 35g of methamphetamine were found in Chui’s pocket. Police said he refused to cooperate.
Police later seized about 20kg of methamphetamine and 2.8kg of cocaine from a unit on Ting Kok Road. The total value of the drugs was estimated to be HK$10 million.
Separately, at Hong Kong International Airport on Friday, customs officers confiscated about 3.9kg of suspected cocaine worth HK$4.4 million. A 20-year old incoming passenger was arrested in connection with the drugs.
The arrested man, who claimed to be a merchant, arrived in the city from Bogota, Colombia, travelling via Panama, Brazil, Ethiopia and the Philippines on Thursday.
The customs officers found three slabs of suspected cocaine concealed inside his suitcase. The man was charged with one count of trafficking a dangerous drug.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the maximum penalty for trafficking a dangerous drug is life imprisonment and a HK$5 million fine.
