Hong Kong man arrested for dangerous driving after lorry hits woman, 83, in fatal accident

Victim freed by firefighters and taken unconscious to hospital, where she was declared dead

An elderly woman died after being hit by a lorry at a traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossing in Tsuen Wan on Tuesday morning.

Police arrested the 45-year-old driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. The man was being held for questioning and had not been charged, according to police.

The 83-year-old woman was crossing Wing Shun Road outside Riviera Garden at about 9.45am when she was struck by the vehicle.

A police spokesman said; “The victim was trapped and had to be freed by firefighters.”

She was taken unconscious to Yan Chai Hospital, where she was declared dead at about 10.10am.

Officers from the New Territories South traffic unit are looking into the case.

Police appealed for witnesses to call 3661 1710.

A section of the road was closed for nearly three hours until the lorry was towed away. It was taken to a government vehicle plant in Tuen Mun for examination.

The spokesman said normal traffic resumed shortly after 12.30pm.

Police figures show that 108 people died in 105 fatal traffic accidents across the city in the first 11 months of 2016, slightly up from the 103 deaths in 102 accidents during the same period the previous year.
