Police arrested a 33-year-old woman for leaving her two children unattended in a locked subdivided flat in Sham Shui Po on Friday morning.

The children – a five-year-old boy and two-year-old girl – were discovered when their neighbour overheard them shouting for their mother from the 10th-floor flat of Wellcome Mansion on Cheung Sha Wan Road at about 9am.

Fearing for the safety of the young children, the woman quickly notified police. When officers arrived, they found the flat was locked and had to ask the building’s principal tenant to unlock the door.

The two children were sent to Caritas Medical Centre for examination.

“Their mother was arrested when she later returned home,” a police spokesman said. She was being held for questioning and had not been charged.
