Hong Kong pop star Shirley Kwan charged with assault and intimidation of hotel staff

Canto-pop singer Shirley Kwan Suk-yee was officially charged on Friday for assaulting and intimidating a worker at a Discovery Bay hotel in March.

The 50-year-old performer appeared at Lantau North Police Station accompanied by man who said they were there to cancel the report. However, after a two-hour stay, a police spokesman confirmed that Kwan had been charged with one count of intimidation and one count of common assault.

She did not answer questions as she boarded left the police station.

The singer was arrested on March 16 after an early-morning altercation with an employee at the Auberge Discovery Bay on Siena Avenue, where she had been staying.

Kwan was granted bail and is due to appear at West Kowloon Magistrates Courts on May 24.

According to the Crimes Ordinance, anyone found guilty of intimidation is liable to a HK$2,000 fine and a maximum of five years jail. Common assault, meanwhile, carries a maximum penalty of one year imprisonment.
